Alfred H. Krieger, age 88, of Goodview, died Friday, January 25, 2013, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis.
Alfred was the son of Paul and Ida (Volkmann) Krieger and was born in Winona on April 21, 1924. He graduated from Winona Senior High in 1942. Al served in the Army Air Force with the 77th Troop Carrier Squadron during World War II in the European Theater. After his honorable discharge in 1945, he married Dorothy Schumacher on November 7, 1945, in Altura, Minn. He was formerly employed at O’Brien Lumber Company and in 1959 he joined H. Choate & Co. as controller and later became part owner. In retirement he worked at various hardware/lumber yards and rental properties. In his spare time he enjoyed wood working and model making.
Al was a 64-year member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Winona, having served on the church council and various committees; a past member of the Winona Lions Club; served on the Board of Directors of the Winona Chamber of Commerce. In 1973 he was named “Jack Frost” for the Jaycees Winter Carnival. In 1977, a “Boss of the Year” award was given to him by the Winona Jaycees.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters: Karen (Paul) Pretzel, Tomahawk, Wis., and Julie (Michael) Smith, Winona; two grandchildren: Jenny (Brian) Olson, Holmen, Wis., and Maddie (Patrick Bohn) Smith, Eden Prairie, Minn.; two great-grandchildren: Elise and Benjamin Olson, Holmen, Wis.; a brother-in-law, LaVerne (Norma) Schumacher, Winona; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and sister-in-law.
Services to remember Al were Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, with Rev. Paul F. Welke officiating. Military burial honors were provided by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 at the funeral home. A private family entombment took place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, Minn.
