We deserve better (02/03/2013)
From: Steve Schild

Sometimes it’s best to ignore drivel. Other times it demands a response. The latter is the case with Paul Double’s recent letter to the editor.

If Mr. Double were a private citizen who wanted to be a wise guy about public policy, that would be one thing. But because he’s a city councilman, it’s completely different—especially since his “humor” shows contempt for the people he’s supposed to represent.

In case you missed it, Mr. Double took a cheap shot at citizens who did exactly what citizens are supposed to do—participate in the political process. He said the city should impose a moratorium on tourism because it’s bad for your health—lots of eating, drinking and sitting around, you know.

But he was really ridiculing citizens who asked the council serious questions about the frac-sand industry’s impact on the city and region, questions about air quality monitoring and the cumulative effects of hundreds of trucks loaded with silica sand. The only funny thing about that—funny peculiar, not funny ha ha—is that Mr. Double didn’t offer any answers to those serious questions.

We deserve better from the people who represent us.
