We have just read about people escaping from North Korea who are told by Chinese Christians to “Look for a building with a cross on it!” Why? Because Christians are most likely to help them escape the Chinese who will send them back to the hell-on-earth that is North Korea, where they will be tortured and thrown into prison camps or maybe even killed.
This is a new look for 2013; Chinese Christians willing to help refugees either merge into Chinese society or get into South Korea. People go to jail for doing this! It is a cheering thought to know that the Chinese Christians will risk their freedom for strangers from North Korea! We are happy to know that the government of China permits believers to put on their churches a symbol of freedom to not only those who are bothered by their sins but to those persecuted by evil men or governments.
We are reminded by the great apostle of our Lord Jesus, who was often put in prison but continued to write and speak about freedom and concluded “In the cross of Christ I glory!” And there is that old hymn “In the Cross of Christ, I glory towering over the wrecks of time.”
Here is a good proposition for those of you who make New Year’s resolutions. If Chinese Christians are willing to go to jail for pointing refugees to the cross, cannot some of us decide to share the cross of glory with our neighbor who may not know or care about it? The least we can do each day is do one thing good to or for someone which is backed by our connection and appreciation for our faith in what our Lord on the Cross has accomplished for us and why we can say with Paul “In the Cross of Christ I glory.”
A sine cera (without wax) Happy New Year singing “In the Cross of Christ I glory towering over the wrecks of time.”
P.S. You can kill two birds with one stone this year. It’s not too late. Give up your New Year resolutions for Lent, which is coming up!
