  (ARCHIVES)Back to Current
Postal service (02/10/2013)
From: John Kosidowski

During the past week the Twin Cities TV stations have been advertising that the Postal Service is accepting applications for jobs as postal carriers and will be hiring 400 people with a starting salary of $15 an hour and benefits. On Wednesday February 6th the Postal Service announces that Saturday deliveries will be discontinued in August 2013 after a postal increase of a penny on February 1st. The Winona newspaper reports that there will be a reduction in the postal workforce in Winona through attrition and retirements as a result of the Saturday delivery being discontinued.

I donít have a business degree, but a quick glance at these events indicates there is something radically wrong with this picture. The Twin Cities are going to add 400 more carriers and wonder what the total number is for the entire United States. If a small, or large, business operated under the same business plan as the post office it would be a plan for certain bankruptcy. For any business to add employees while at the same time have a plan to decrease either a product production, or a service, is a recipe for disaster. Is it any wonder that when the Postal Service continues to operate on such a flawed business plan the results are a loss every year? Is there anyone, or anybody, that can stop this madness? Do we have a legislator that is aware of such a disaster and is ready to step up to do something about it?
