To kick off its 2013 Painting Series, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM), in Winona, is working with the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) on the exhibition 150 Years on Minnesota’s Waters. The exhibition will be on display at the MMAM from February 21st to May 23rd.
This unique exhibition will highlight the tremendous influence that our regional waterways have played in artistic production throughout Minnesota’s history. While the exhibition will feature more historic work than contemporary, it will portray an impressive span. Among many other significant works of art, visitors will experience the descriptive approach of Seth Eastman’s work from the 1840’s, the emotive modern abstract work of Elof Wedin, and the variety of creative approaches utilized by regional landscape painters today.
“From border to border, Minnesotans have a deep and lasting association with its lakes, streams and rivers,” said Brian Szott, the co-curator of the exhibition. He continued, “The very name of our state speaks to our relationship with water. ‘Mni Sota’ translates from the Dakota language as, ‘the land where the waters are so clear they reflect the clouds.’”
During this exhibition, adult members of the Minnesota Historical Society can receive $2 off of their admission to the MMAM by presenting their membership card. As always, members of the MMAM will receive free admission.
