On Saturday, thousands gathered on the National Mall for a rally urging President Obama and Congress to reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline project and address climate change. Eric Nelson, retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife employee from Winona, hopped on a train Friday to take part in the rally.
Dubbed the "Earth Train," the ride took Minnesotans and others east for the rally. Nelson said he hoped to bring the local issue of frac sand mining for the hydraulic fracturing process to the rally. With letters for President Obama tucked into his luggage, Nelson boarded the train with a handful of local residents sending him off, waving signs touting environmental protection messages.
"I saw the trip as an opportunity to voice my public opinion and let Congress, and the President, know that we citizens have some grave concerns about climate and energy," said Nelson.
