Winona State University (WSU) student Mitchell James Grierson, 19, of Dassel, was found dead in his dorm room bed by Winona Police Department officers at 12:51 a.m. on Sunday, February 17, in Morey Hall. According to the report, Grierson had gone to a house party with a male acquaintance on Friday night, and returned home with the acquaintance at 11 p.m. that night. The acquaintance left Grierson, and returned at 9 a.m. the next morning to retrieve a laptop from Grierson’s room. The male acquaintance told officers that Grierson was in his bed in the same position he was the night before, and that the acquaintance assumed he was asleep because of the hour and the fact they had been out the night before. The male acquaintance got a phone call from a female acquaintance of Grierson’s at 12 a.m. on Sunday. The woman wanted the male acquaintance to check on Grierson because she had not seen him all day. The male acquaintance found Grierson still in bed and unresponsive and called police. Officers determined Grierson was dead. His body has been sent to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy. Police officials said there is no reason to suspect foul play.
Mitchell was a freshman at WSU. In a letter to the WSU community, Vice President for Student Life and Development Connie Gores said that while the cause of Grierson’s death is still a mystery, there is no reason to be suspicious. Gores encouraged mourners to come together in honoring Grierson’s life and to “keep Mitchell’s family and friends in your thoughts and hearts.”
