I want to let the community know about an upcoming event and a new organization that has formed in response to the many youth suicides in our community recently. Winona Community Action, Response and Education about Suicide (Winona CARES) is a volunteer group of parents, teachers and school personnel in the Winona community. Our purpose is to provide opportunities for parents of teens to find support, ask questions, and talk about parenting concerns and grief. In light of that purpose, we are sponsoring a panel presentation with a question and answer session to the community next week. "What Parents Need to Know About Teen Grief" will be held at the Winona Senior Friendship Center, 214 Main Street on Wednesday, February 27th from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 pm. Panel members from WAPS, Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center, WSU Counselor Education and more will be there to share ways to help a child who is grieving and how to deal with one's own feelings and fears in the face of a teen's complex emotional and behavioral development further complicated by grief. Please join us.
