Catherine Elizabeth Kalmes Sherwood, age 90, of Rollingstone and Goodview passed away on Monday, February 18, 2013, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare in Winona. Catherine was born on May 22, 1922, to Peter and Susan (Rivers) Kalmes in Rollingstone, MN on the family farm. She graduated from Holy Trinity Catholic School in 1940. Afterwards, she attended and graduated from the Winona Business School. Catherine’s first job was with Watkins Inc., in Winona, where she did clerical work. She left Watkins and spent the rest of her working career (37 years) in the Winona County Auditor’s Office becoming Chief Deputy Auditor. Catherine ran for and won election to the position of Winona County Auditor after the retirement of Al Wiczek. Catherine ran for and won re-election serving two full terms before retiring as Winona County Auditor.
Catherine married Milton Sherwood on October 22, 1953, in Rollingstone. Together, they raised their son, Steve, in Norton Township and Goodview. She is preceded in death by her husband, Milton; parents, Peter and Susan Kalmes, her siblings Herb Kalmes, Art Kalmes, Ed Kalmes, Josie Hoffman,Helen Conway, Arnie Kalmes, and Ray (Skip) Kalmes. Catherine will be greatly missed by her son, Steve, and his wife, Toni, of Goodview; granddaughters, Casie Sherwood (Jim Strom) of Duluth and Kelly Sherwood,(Sam Mueller) of Winona; many relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, February 25, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Rollingstone, with Father William Kulas officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, February 26, 11:15 a.m., Lane 5 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minn.
Pallbearers will be Fritz Hoffman, Steve Kalmes, Denny Kalmes, Lyle Bartsh, and Stan Bartsh.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Eugene Kalmes and Tom Conway
