Farm worker rights and farm labor law made the news last week. The story last week showed that two large farms in Southeast Minnesota had not been paying overtime to their hourly workers is indeed troubling. I have been hearing stories of workers on some big dairy and hog farms in the area not being fully paid according to Minnesota law in the last few years.
Whether workers are long-time citizens or newer immigrants, they should not be denied their full wages. It is time for the University of Minnesota and the U of M Extension to dramatically increase their education of farm employers about farm labor law and farm worker rights. I feel education is the path to justice for all farm workers.
