James Allen Asleson, 50, of Winona, faces four charges of felony possession of child pornography after Winona police officers discovered numerous images of child pornography on his computer. According to the complaint, Winona police found five images of child pornography involving young girls, on a computer belonging to Asleson. Goodview police officer Travis Volkman conducted a forensic investigation of the computer for the Winona County Attorney’s office, and reportedly discovered hundreds of pornographic images involving children.
Asleson shared child pornography over the internet with an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent in 2008. In March of 2010, FBI agents talked to Asleson and seized his computer. According to the complaint, Asleson told the FBI he did not think it was illegal to download child pornography and had no desire to sexually abuse children.
An FBI agent in Rochester gave Asleson’s computer to the Winona Police Department for investigation in May, 2011. The case was referred to the Winona County Attorney’s Office on July 7, 2011.
If convicted, Asleson could be sentenced to up to 20 years in jail and $20,000 in fines. He will make his first court appearance on April 23.
