Lovas Sr., Eugene E. (03/06/2013)
Eugene E. Lovas Sr., 81, of Winona, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at Winona Health.

Eugene Edward was born August 21, 1931, in Stockton, Minn., to Frank and Elenor (Verguth) Lovas. He graduated from Winona Senior High in 1950 and he went on to study journalism at Winona Secretarial School. From there, he served in the United States Army, from which he was honorably discharged. He proudly worked for the Merchant Marines, where he started as a deck hand and was promoted twice. On November 7, 1953, he married Shirley Butrimas. Eugene made his wife, Shirley a happy lady by simply driving her around on every country road in Minnesota and Wisconsin. They lived a happy and modest life together and she preceded him in death on August 2, 2005. Eugene was a dispatch coordinator for Yellow Cab and Winona Transit.

Eugene’s passion was literature and was a very talented writer. Throughout his lifetime, he wrote volumes of poetry, which he would read to anyone fortunate enough to have a minute or two to listen. He considered his writing his greatest achievement. Anyone who knew Eugene considered him a master storyteller. He could entertain a large group or a single person for hours with his many stories of his life as a child or while working on the boats. We heard them all a dozen times and found them funny each time they were told. We will miss those stories. Eugene was also a skilled bowler where he won many league and city championships. He ran the pro shop at Winona Bowl for years.

He is survived by a daughter, Ellyn, (special friend Keith Peterson) Lovas, Winona; a son, Eugene (special friend Linda Krett) Lovas Jr., Winona, Minn.; four grandchildren: Dana (special friend Joe Palubicki) Dahlquist, Kris (special friend Kyle Kirkeby) Glover, Alyssa (special friend Aaron Judge) Lovas and Cassandra (special friend Tanner Samp) Lovas; four great- grandchildren: Dylan Ozmun, Corryn Dahlquist, Adam Judge, and Lyla Kirkeby; a brother, Robert Lovas Sr., Cochrane, Wis., a sister, Joyce (Norman) Burbach, Winona; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; and daughter, Kathleen Lovas.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Chapel of Our Lady, Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona, Minn., with Rev. Don Lovas officiating. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery, Stockton, Minn., with military burial honors provided by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9, Winona, Minn.

Visitation will be at the Chapel beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Casket bearers will be: Ron Speltz, Eric Nustad, Frank Lovas, Kyle Kirkeby, Joe Palubicki and honorary bearer, Art Speltz.

Words of sympathy or remembrance may be left at www.fawcett-junkerfuneralhome.com. Services entrusted to Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Fountain City, Wis., and Winona, Minn.
