Sen. Matt Schmit, DFL - Red Wing, will hold several town hall meetings Saturday in Plainview, Wabasha and St. Charles. The town hall meeting in Plainview will be held at 9 a.m. at City Hall; the town hall meeting in St. Charles will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the St. Charles Community Center; the town hall meeting in Wabasha will be held at 2 p.m. at Eagle’s Nest Coffee.
Schmit is the author of a bill that would drastically change the regulatory landscape for frac sand businesses in Southeastern Minnesota. The bill, if approved, would fund a Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS), a broad environmental study on the potential effects of the industry in the region, and would allow local moratoria on the industry to be extended or renewed while the GEIS is prepared. It would also create a state sand board that would study the industry, along with the creation of a sand tax that local governments could impose on sand mines.
