Helen L. Kohner, age 92, of Winona, Minn., passed away on Monday, March 18, 2013, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare.
Helen was born on August 16, 1920, in St. Charles, Minn, to Paul and Elizabeth (Kieffer) Motske. Helen graduated from St. Charles High School in 1938. In 1940, Helen was united in marriage to Alvin Kohner; the early years of their marriage were spent on the Kohner family farm near Altura, after which they moved to Winona. In the late 1960s Helen, Alvin, and family developed the KOA campground south of Winona and operated it for many years. Helen enjoyed flower gardening, growing and canning vegetables, and baking. She attracted a wide variety of birds to her backyard bird feeders. Helen loved to travel with her family; her retirement years were spent with her husband between their homes in Winona and Mesa, Arizona, with the occasional stop in Las Vegas. Helen was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and was dedicated to her Catholic faith.
Helen resided at St. Anne Extended Health Care and was very grateful for the many new friends and caring staff. The family would like to extend gratitude to Saint Anne staff for the many years of care provided for our mother.
Helen is survived by her children, Thomas (Barbara) Kohner, Bluff Siding, Wisc., Gregory Kohner, La Crescent, Minn., Jon (Kara) Kohner, Winona, Minn., and Jay (Emilie Falc) Kohner, Winona, Minn.; son-in-law, Dennis Olson, Winona, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Diane Kohner, Winona, Minn.; grandchildren, Jeffery Kohner, Kristi Kohner, Aaron Miller, Adrianne “AJ” Olson, Casey Kohner, Matthew Kohner, Peter Kohner, Stephanie Olson, Ethan Kohner and Julian Kohner; great-grandchildren, Michael, Luke, Lauren and Shaun; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Gary Kohner; daughter, Susan Miller; sisters, Elizabeth and Marie; and brother, Ralph.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, in the Chapel of Our Lady at St. Anne Extended Healthcare. Monsignor Roy E. Literski will officiate.
Helen will be laid to rest in the spring at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in Rollingstone, Minn.
Visitation will be held in the Chapel of Our Lady, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare, on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the Mass.
