I really do believe John Latsch was a good man and had very good intentions in trying to make 18,000 acres available for all to enjoy. The problem is that he left some of the most useful river islands to the city of Winona, which has turned a part of John Latsch’s dream into an ugly mess. What John has left for all to enjoy, has become a private parking lot for privately owned boathouses and an island that has become a privately used dump. The city has taken a wonderful dream of one man and made it into a real mess. The island is not and cannot be enjoyed by all. His mission was certainly left, at least part of it, in the hands of the wrong people. It would appear as if John is not the only person to be chased off the island, but now most everyone has been chased off the island with the exception of a select few who now have private use of the place that was supposed to be enjoyed by all. Winona is really good at destroying things that have had historical importance. The entire downtown area has been gutted by our wonderful leaders. The Morgan block. The Post Office. The parks. We gave the Winona Junior High School on Broadway away for a song. The list goes on and on. John Latsch would be very upset with us if he could see the place today. Winona, shame on you for being so stupid with our treasures.
