Police pursue alleged car thief (04/07/2013)
By Chris Rogers

Winona Police officers pursued a stolen vehicle through neighborhood streets before the alleged thief jumped out of the car and ran. Michael Robert Nelson, 32, of Austin, fled police on foot before falling while attempting to hurdle a fence on the 450 block of East Mark Street, according to the report. The chase started at Sixth and Liberty streets at 10:39 a.m. on Monday, April 1, when officers observed a red Pontiac Grand Am that had been reported stolen heading east on Sixth Street. The officers turned on their siren and pursued the car as it weaved through neighborhood streets.

After his tumble, officers arrested Nelson for motor vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, fleeing peace officers in a motor vehicle, fleeing peace officers on foot, and driving after cancellation of his license inimical to public safety.

Police officials said they are investigating whether Nelson was involved in any of the other vehicle thefts that have occurred in the city in the last few weeks.
