Is Easter over? (04/14/2013)
From: T.M. Schoewe

The young lady assistant in the doctor’s office the other day said to me, “well, Easter is over!” I knew what she meant on the surface. But that statement does leave something hanging in the air, a silent but loud “Now What?” Maybe it’s a “So what!”

Well, dear reader, “Easter is not over.” Easter IS! This is the Gospel that is the “Good News,” fulfilling the Angel Chorus “peace on earth good will to mankind.” So the risen Christ is saying to the women and to the disciples hiding in the upper room, “Don’t be afraid,” and “Peace be with you.” The war between God and man (you and me) introduced by Satan is over! The crucified Christ has satisfied God’s justice and gives you now His peace.

It is the peace the Lord won for us by His very birth and life; the peace that was ultimately purchased by His death on the cross. And it is this peace He places with His disciples (the very peace which is placed with all believers) to proclaim! So Sunday after Sunday the people of God hear the announcement of this forgiveness and share this peace with one another!

Now think of this for a moment! Those ladies in the gospel and those disciples in hiding in that upper room are only greeted by the risen Lord with “peace,” but are told “as the Father sent me so I send you.”

And to what a world they were sent! It was a world that had just crucified the Lord. It was a Roman dictatorship. To keep order there was always the threat of crucifixion. (Peter was crucified upside down.) Taxes and death! The program of “bread and circuses” could not even save the day. But the glorious gospel of the Risen Christ with His forgiveness and peace is still with us today!

Like theirs, ours is an ever-troubled world and like the disciples, we might like to stay in hiding. Troubles are all around us, in our homes and schools, our town and city governments, across our entire state and country, the entire world for that matter. Suicide bombers are all over the Middle East. North Korea and Iran threaten the world with nuclear weapons. Our troops are coming home from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan after years of fighting and dealing with what war has inflicted upon them in oh so many ways, coming home to a country that can’t even solve its fiscal problems. What a world!

Coming back to the “so what?” and “now what?” about Easter. There are still people who have experienced Christ’s resurrection and are being sent or just living in this world who are with courage in their hearts sharing the “peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you.” Join them!
