Here is a remedy for everyone who is sick of the frac sand controversy. The House and Senate in St. Paul are considering legislation which would increase the Renewable Energy Standard to 40% by 2030 and establish a new statewide solar energy standard.
When Minnesota adopted a 25% by 2025 standard in 2006, we were among the national leaders in wind and solar power. Now other states have passed us by. Would you believe that Iowa already gets almost 25% of its electricity from wind, way ahead of us. This legislation would be a big step toward weaning us from our dependency on oil and gas. It would expand wind and solar power which doesnít contribute to climate change or deplete our water supply but does create thousands of well-paying, permanent jobs.
Our frac sand is used to extract gas and oil, trapping us in the old path that leads to environmental destruction and seasonal short-term jobs. Letís get off that road and move toward the future. Support the Omnibus Energy Bills, H.F. 956 and S.F. 901.
