Three good Samaritans helped a Winona County Sheriff’s deputy extricate victims trapped in their partially submerged vehicle after it went off the road and rolled into a creek in New Hartford Township. A New Hartford couple was trapped in their vehicle in the freezing-cold water of the stream for close to 40 minutes before the deputy and citizens were able to free them. Rod and Kelly Davis, of Eyota, gave the responding deputy a ride to the scene of the accident, after his squad vehicle went off the road not far from the accident. The three joined citizen David Weigel, who was already at the scene, in helping to pry open the upside-down vehicle. The door of the vehicle was pinned against the rocks of the stream by the weight of the vehicle, deputies said.
“We wedged the door half open and just kept pulling,” said responding Deputy Bill Spitzer.
The New Hartford couple was taken to the hospital for possible hypothermia but are safe. Spitzer said the Samaritans took off without waiting for thanks once medical personnel arrived.
