March for Babies April 20 (04/17/2013)
On average, a baby is born too soon every minute. More than 7,000 babies in Minnesota will be born prematurely this year – and the Winona community is coming together to changes this.

Hundreds of friends, families and co-workers will march for health babies at the annual March for Babies Saturday, April 20 at Lake Park Lodge. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:00 a.m.

Sarah and Adam Gilbertson walk in the Winona March for Babies in the honor of their son Henry and in memory of his twin sister Gracelynn, who passed away during pregnancy due to an infection.

Their journey has been one of sadness and joy. Henry was born 12 weeks early in 2011 when the family was living in Billings, Montana. Henry weighed 2 pounds, 1 ounce. “We lovingly called him “Scrappy” because of his fighting spirit,” said Sarah.

Because of his weight and size, Henry experienced many difficulties. Due to his underdeveloped lungs Henry received surfactant therapy, a lifesaving treatment developed by March of Dimes grantees. Henry also underwent a PDA ligation, a heart surgery to help him regulate his blood pressure, and he contracted pneumonia.

During Henry’s hospital stay in Colorado, Adam landed a new job in Minnesota, closer to family. Henry was transferred to the newborn intensive care unit at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital. After 150 days and three NICUs, Henry went home weighing 8 pounds, 5 ounces!

Throughout their journey, Sarah and Adam received support from the March of Dimes. “Their presence and support

Today, Henry is a happy 2-year-old who is walking, talking, and incredibly smart. He also loves to sing, dance, count and say his ABCs.
