“The Way of a Trout” is a famous nature film made by James W. Wilkie in 1969-1970 and it has fans all over the world trying to figure out how he was able to film the trout underwater.
It won the 1970 Blue Ribbon Award at the American Film Festival of the Educational Film Library Association and 1970 Chris Award at the Columbus Film Festival, among other national and international awards.
Mr. Wilkie made this and several other nature movies as his hobby. He distributed his films for many years to schools and organizations around the Midwest, free of charge. He donated “The Way of a Trout” to Trout Unlimited, an advocacy group for the promotion of trout fishing and trout steam rehabilitation who has used the film as a fund raising tool for many years.
Most of the film was made near Minneapolis, with extensive underwater scenes shot in a large tank in a warehouse in Savage, Minnesota. Many outdoor scenes were shot at Whispering Pines Resort near Minocqua, Wisconsin. We are very fortunate to have Larry Jost of Alma, an avid trout fisherman, to answer questions about trout fishing and the local streams around Alma which harbor the elusive trout. Larry will bring along some of his fly fishing gear and perhaps tell a few fishing tales.
