As I sit in front of my computer, getting ready to write this letter, I look down at the t-shirt I’m wearing that is emblazoned with a pink equal sign on a background of red. Below that insignia appear the words “ALL LOVE IS EQUAL.” This truth has been obvious to me ever since I was about two years old, and able to put a name to what binds all of us together...ALL of us.
I was taught to love and respect everyone, without condition. Everyone. Period.
I was taught to celebrate our differences, to look for the good in each of us, to appreciate what we have to offer one another, and to stand for equality for every person who shares the air that I breathe.
Our legislators will soon have an extraordinary opportunity to stand for equality, by stamping out second-class citizenship in our state and granting all loving couples, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity, the freedom to marry. I believe that we have the moral obligation to encourage them to make this loving and just decision. In the interest of love, we can’t let this opportunity get past us.
Please join me in thanking Representative Gene Pelowski and Senator Jeremy Miller for the good work they do on our behalf. They face difficult votes every day, as they weigh options to determine what will, ultimately, make life better for all Minnesotans. They deserve our respect and our encouragement.
Then, please join me in letting them know that a “yes” vote on the Freedom to Marry bill is really the only levelheaded, fair-minded option available to them. Indeed, a “yes” vote is really the only available option that is consistent with their commitment to serve in the best interest of all of their constituents.
I look forward to the day that we can say that “ALL LOVE IS EQUAL” in Minnesota. With the help of our legislators, that day will come, hopefully in the very near future.
Gene and Jeremy, please don’t pass up this unique opportunity to help make the right kind of history, right now.
