Drug testing (05/01/2013)
From: Mike Parkhurst

Los Angeles, Calif.

I agree 100% with your editorial about drug testing for welfare recipients. For those who think this is an invasion of privacy or “unfair” let’s look at it from another angle.

Suppose a driver is caught driving drunk or impaired by either alcohol or drugs. Not just once but several times. Usually, the punishment is a large fine, jail or both and the loss of license to drive.

Such actions put others at risk as well as the driver, yes? Shouldn’t that driver be punished?

He or she generally knows, in advance, what that punishment is. So why should an offender be let off free for even a first offense when his/her actions jeopardize others?

By the same token, the regular drug user should not be given leniency by continuing to have support — OF ANY KIND — by taxpayers.

Another way to look at it: If a drug user is partially supported by the next-door neighbor (the taxpayer) and consistently blasts loud music at three in the morning aimed at that neighbor, why should the neighbor continue to pay for the offender’s food or rent or telephone? Where is the logic? The fairness? The justice?

We have lost the ability to determine what is right and what is wrong.

As long as America continues coddling those who take advantage of taxpayer-forced generosity, we as a society and nation will continue to grease the wheels of a wagon headed toward the cliff’s edge.
