Kenneth Ross, age 89, of Winona, died Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona, Minn.
Ken worked hard, physical jobs; such as an ice delivery man and then at Swifts where he put in long days working overtime as the normal. While at Swifts, he had a terrible accident which left him disabled for life. He underwent many painful surgeries to try to restore his back. He was a physical man and it was difficult for him to not do labor-intensive work. Unable to work after his accident, he was the cook and caretaker of his home. His home on Mark Street often had four generations under one roof; with his parents living there and his children and their children. He provided well for his family and always made sure everyone had more than they needed. All of his children were welcomed back to share his home after they were married with their spouses to allow them to get a good start on their life. He helped his children build their homes, sheds and worked on all their projects. He was always ready to help. Dick’s daughter Shannon was like his own child and spent much of her childhood weekends in grandma and grandpa’s home and at Money Creek, as did his great- granddaughter Aspen, running the campground at Money Creek. They camped at Money Creek Haven for 44 years and had Ross Road named after him. Chastity shares the love of camping with her family. Shaun spent his mornings before school with grandma and grandpa and was treated like royalty. Ken was always there to help his children and grandchildren with anything, and he could always be counted on. Holidays were celebrated at his home with food and gifts for all. He loved camping, country music, western movies, ball games, races, going to the casino, a good laugh, horseshoes, junking with his good friend Ralph Hengel, running cars with the Northrup’s, and his family. He loved his naps too. Life changed for him when his wife, Betty, passed away. As his granddaughter Shannon said, “when his wife passed away, he was like a ship without a captain.”
He was born on March 25, 1924, to August and Elsie (Weber) Ross. He had one brother, Robert. He married Betty Berger on March 25, 1945.
He is survived by children: Dick (Della Carroll), Tom (Charlotte), Mary (Jerry) Johnson, Robyn (Willie) Wehlage, stepson, Walter (Betty) Stolpa, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and special niece, Kim Ovel and her family.
Rest in peace, Dad. We will miss you greatly. Thank you for all that you did and all that you gave. You lived life with the pedal full speed. Bless you and God’s speed be with you.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty, his parents, and brother, Robert.
Private family services were held. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, Minn.
