Dorothy S. Fend, age 100, of Winona, Minn., died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Lake Winona Manor, Winona.
Dorothy Stella Theresa was born August 17, 1912, in Winona, Minn., to Paul H. and Mary (Jereczek) Schultz. On December 7, 1935, she married John C. Fend in Owatonna, Minn., and he preceded her in death February 26, 1981. In her late teens and early twenties, she was employed at Conrad Furs, Winona, as a seamstress. After getting married, her attention turned to being a housewife and raising her children. In her late thirties, Dorothy was employed as a seamstress for Boland Manufacturing, Winona. In the 1960s, Dorothy began to help families with housekeeping and providing additional childcare.
Dorothy enjoyed and appreciated her youth at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. In 1944, Dorothy, her husband and the family moved to West Seventh Street, which allowed them to join St. Casimir Catholic Church and become active in the church and school. When Joan, her daughter, began attending Winona State University and being involved in the Newman Center, Dorothy decided to join Cathedral of the Sacred Heart for her spiritual needs. Her Catholic faith and praying the rosary was an important part of her life.
She is survived by her son, John R., Winona; a son-in-law, John James Ganga, Columbus, Wis; two grandchildren: John W. Ganga and Katy J. Geiger; four great-grandchildren: Jacob and Paige Ganga, Kyle and Katelyn Geiger; a sister Lorraine Bauer, Winona; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Joan Ganga, and two sisters: Amelia Daley and Marie Kiedrowski.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona, with Rev. Jason Kern officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 8, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
The family of Dorothy would like to give their heartfelt appreciation for the quality care given by all departments and staff at Winona Health and especially the nurses and care givers at Lake Winona Manor since 2005.
