Drazkowski and Orwell (05/12/2013)
From: Steve Schild

Here’s a classic example of Orwellian doublespeak from Republican Rep. Steve Drazkowski.

In Friday’s Daily News, Drazkowski explains his opposition to gay-marriage legislation by saying, “Democrats attacked Republicans mercilessly for bringing up a social issue last year. Now they’re patting themselves on the back for it. Their hypocrisy is astounding.”

What’s truly astounding is the perverted spin Drazkowski tries to put on facts, which are these:

Last year, in an attempt to mobilize the far-right reaches of their base, Republicans tried-- and failed--to outlaw gay marriage by amending Minnesota’s constitution.

Now the Republicans have lost again, on the same issue for the same reason: most Minnesotans believe banning gay marriage is discrimination, pure and simple. Drazkowski doesn’t have to like that. But he has no business calling anybody a hypocrite when he, a self-proclaimed small-government, individual-liberties guy, wants the state to tell anybody whom they can marry.
