Ron Grothe of SRF Consulting marks the exact location of the pillars beneath the existing Highway 43 bridge. His work will help the Minnesota Department of Transportation as it continues planning for the new bridge.

As construction season heats up, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) is making progress on plans to construct a new interstate bridge in Winona and repair the existing bridge. On Wednesday, May 22, traffic on the Highway 43 bridge will be reduced to one lane from 9 a.m. to noon as crews examine the sidewalk and decks of the bridge.

On Monday, May 13, crews from subcontracting firms were surveying the site of the new bridge, and mapping the site of the new bridge and the existing bridge.

Ron Grothe of SRF Consulting lugged a pole carrying electronic surveying equipment under the bridge while, across Second Street, a robotic partner followed his movements. The team recorded the position of the bridge pillars as well as the street, driveways, and other important points. Grothe explained that Mn/DOT wants the pillars on the new bridge to line up with the existing pillars.

Meanwhile utility-locating crews snaked transmitters along underground utilities and marked the location of gas and electrical lines in preparation for soil borings that will test the stability of ground beneath the proposed pillars.
