Protect the bluffs! (05/15/2013)
From: Joe Morse

The bluffs need our attention and protection! Those who want to tear them up for frac sand or build on the edges for a view are proposing to change the bluff protection standards established in the county zoning ordinance.

For three years before the ordinance was finally enacted in March 2011, many hundreds of people who want to see trees, not houses, on ridge lines from La Crescent to Minneiska showed up and spoke out to prevent the desecration of the beautiful valleys and bluffs that define our county.

As the county planning commission and staff consider the proposed changes, letís not repeat the mistakes of the past in the lively debate over what our county will look like.

Before any public hearings or action, citizens need to be provided with opportunities in public meetings to understand the implications and effects of any proposed changes. Questions needing answers such as: How many houses will be affected? Where are they located? On which bluffs? In what valleys? Along which roads?

Letís make sure we all have the same accurate information before we start to engage in serious consideration of any changes to the ordinance. Itís the least we can expect about changes that will affect how the entire county looks.
