Ellen Smith, Board President of the Winona Family YMCA announced today that the Y has been engaged in a nationwide search for a new CEO to succeed Andy Blomsness. Andy will be retiring on June 30, 2013 after more than 38 years with the Y movement.

The CEO Search Committee completed their work and made a recommendation to the Board of Directors this afternoon. Ms. Smith is pleased to announce that the Board of Directors has approved the hiring of Derek Madsen, Chief Executive Officer

Derek is currently a Program Executive with the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities and in charge of Youth Intervention Services. He runs a department with 42 FTE Staff and a $2.5 million annual budget. During his current role, he has attained $370,000 in new grant and contract funding for program services. He led his Branch Annual Support Campaign and raised over $579,000 in three years.

Derek also served as Co-Director of the Sioux YMCA Development Initiative which created productive partnerships with CEO’s Boards of Directors, tribal agencies, and community members. In his role, he was responsible for a cross-functional team of 20 – 28 YMCA professionals on an annual basis.

Derek began his Y career as a Youth Development Director at the Emma B. Howe Family YMCA where he mentored students with truancy and academic concerns and worked on Youth Housing programs.

Derek has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Nonprofit Management from Hamline University School of Business

“We are delighted with the selection of Derek as our next CEO,” said Smith. “The selection committee was impressed with Derek’s depth of experience and his commitment to community. He brings significant leadership experience in program development from the YMCAs that he has served. This experience and Derek’s passion for the mission and core values of the YMCA will help us move the Winona YMCA forward in service to our community.”

Derek will begin his new duties on July 1, 2013
