Lewiston sirens under repair (05/22/2013)
Two of three emergency sirens for the City of Lewiston are currently not operational. A new siren has been ordered that will cover the entire city, but estimated delivery is three to five weeks. Repairs to the existing warning system are also planned until the new siren is installed.

Winona County Emergency Management has put Lewiston on the Code Red system for weather warnings. The system is not typically used for weather warnings, but due to the city’s siren deficiencies, the county has offered the use of Code Red. This system will send a call to everyone in the 911 database regarding weather warnings until the emergency siren warning system is fully operational. Because the 911 database may not have the most current phone numbers, residents and businesses are encouraged to go to www.co.winona.mn.us/page/2668 to register their cell phone numbers or home phone numbers with Code Red. Those without Internet access can register for Code Red by calling Winona County Emergency Management Director Mike Peterson at 507-457-6498 or the City of Lewiston’s SkyWarn Coordinator Mike Plass at 507-458-8789.

City residents without a tornado shelter may go to the following locations during a tornado warning:

If the warning is between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.—The Rec Bar & Café at 20 East Main Street.

If the warning is between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. – Elementary School at 115 Fremont St. South

The city is asking residents to register with Code Red, talk to your neighbors about registering, and be extra attentive to the weather.
