High spring water conditions on the Mississippi River have left heron nests vulnerable to human disturbances. Due to the risk of nest abandonment due to human contact, the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge has closed the Mertes Slough until July 12.

The area, near the Highway 43 bridge, is home to over 800 great blue heron and great egrets during the nesting season. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the colony produced an estimated 600 young heron and egrets during last year's nesting season.

Maps showing the closed areas will be posted at the Mertes Slough Boat Landing and are available at the refuge office. For more information, call the Winona District Office at 507-454-7351.
