Wabasha child seriously injured (06/05/2013)
On Monday, June 3, at 1:14 p.m., the Wabasha Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a young child with severe burns. Wabasha deputies, Zumbro Falls First Responders, the Elgin ambulance, Gold Cross Ambulance, and Mayo One responded to a residence on Railroad Street in Millville. Upon the deputies’ arrival, the mother and grandmother were treating the child by soaking him in water in a bathtub. The victim, a 3-year-old boy, is in critical condition having severe burns over 50% of his body.

The injuries happened after the child and three siblings ages three to nine were playing with matches and lighter fluid just off the front steps to the residence. The children said charcoal lighter fluid was sprayed in a tin lunch box and ignited with matches by the children. In an attempt to put out the flames, one of the children stomped on the tin, splashing the burning fluid on the 3-year-old. The mother sustained burns to her hands after attempting to extinguish the flames on the child. The mother was transported by ambulance and the child was transported by Mayo One.
