Longtime Winona resident, Mae Florin, 97, passed away on June 13, 2013, at Lake Winona Manor.
Mae was born May 6, 1916, to Henry and Amalia (Farner) Schollmeier in Fountain City, Wis. She moved to Cochrane, Wis., in 1928 and graduated from Cochrane High School in 1932. Following her high school graduation, she continued her education and received a one-year Rural Teaching Certificate from Winona Teachersí College in 1933, and her two-year Certificate in 1936. She earned her bachelor of science degree in 1940 from Winona State Teachersí College.
On June 16, 1951, she married Linn Florin in Cochrane, Wis. Mae was a devoted parent to their two children, Linda and Donald, and to Linnís children from a previous marriage: James, Rodney and Linn Jr.
Mae was a school teacher in La Crescent, Eden Prairie and Lakefield before teaching in Winona. Most of her teaching career was in Winona at Madison Elementary and Jefferson Elementary. She retired in 1981.
She was an active member of the First Congregational Church, working with Womenís Fellowship and serving on various committees. She was a member of Winona Retired Teachersí Association, Winona County Historical Society, and Winona State Alumni Society. The community of Winona was an important part of her life and she liked doing community volunteer work.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Donald (Jean Matthies) Florin of San Marcos, Calif.; Linda (Charles Payseur) Florin of Ashland, Ore.; stepchildren: Rodney Florin of Fort Collins, Colo.; Linn Florin Jr. of Prior Lake, Minn., grandchildren: Jason, Sara and Kelvin; stepdaughter-in-law Shirl Florin of New Brighton, Minn.; twelve step-grandchildren: Paul, Carol, Deborah, Scott, Greg, Beth, Randy, Brad, Amy, Jeffrey, Ainsley, and Corin; 19 stepgreat-grandchildren; three stepgreat-great grandchildren; other extended family, many friends, and longtime neighbor Judy Benson, who was a dear friend. All those who knew and cherished Mae will always remember her kindness, generosity, loyalty and grace.
Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Linn, on March 21, 2007; her parents; infant son, Richard, and siblings: Carl, Glenn and Fern.
A memorial service to celebrate Maeís life will be held at the First Congregational Church in Winona on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, the Winona County Historical Society or the Lake Winona Manor Aviary Fund.
