If no one has been following the actions our government lately, a lot of things have been coming out that should alarm everyone. First, it was the Department of Justice illegally obtaining phone records of AP reporters; now we learn it is even bigger than that. The latest revelation comes from a private contractor for the NSA named Edward Snowden. He has exposed details of a government surveillance program that sounds like something out of Orwell’s book, 1984. The NSA has been secretly collecting data on all Americans through phone and email records, without regard for any constitutional law, in the name of security. I am all for being safe and secure, but for the government to have this much power in the name of national security is ridiculous. It is past time we let our elected officials know this isn’t what America is about.
The media coverage on this has been minimal, with most of the coverage aimed at Mr. Snowden. I would think the bigger issue the media should be focusing on is the fact that our government is spying on innocent citizens without their knowing about it. You have to respect an individual that risks it all to stand up and expose something that is detrimental to the liberty of all America’s citizens.
