Response to ‘Seminary says Goodbye’ (06/16/2013)
From: Paul-Isaac Franks

I write as a Seminarian of St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, regarding your article “Seminary says goodbye” (22/05/13). Firstly, thank you for your comment that hotels and local businesses would be sorry to see us go. I wish, in turn, to emphasize how thankful we are to the Winona local community for all the help and support we have received over the last twenty-five years. I regret that this expression of gratitude was not made more clear in the article. It was the Seminary’s understanding, before interviewing, that this would be the feature’s focus: it was certainly one of our primary intentions in speaking to the Winona Post.

Unfortunately it seems ‘on the contrary’ that, following the article’s publication, many readers now have the impression that the SSPX is an anti-Semitic organization. This is not the case. The views of Bp. Williamson, who was expelled from the SSPX in 2012 (unfortunately your article did not mention this), do not now, and never have represented those of the SSPX leadership. These views are not taught at the Seminary. They have no bearing on our philosophical or theological training.

We have SSPX members of Jewish birth and parentage. I am one of them.

There may be certain irreconcilable differences between Catholic doctrine and the Jewish religion, but ‘whilst not wanting to gloss over these theological points’ that is a very different matter to Śanti-semitism‚ to hating a man because of his race or religion. I want to make very clear that as an organization, although we do proclaim Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of the ancient Jewish religion, we do not hate any Jew as such, whether religious, or secular.
