Schmitt, Arlen J.
Arlen J. Schmitt, age 77, of rural Fountain City, Wis., died Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at his home.
Arlen James was born July 12, 1935, in Bohriís Valley, Town of Cross, Wis., to Donald and Alice (Loesel) Schmitt. He was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Fountain City High School. On August 10, 1955, he married Anna J. Pronschinske at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Waumandee, Wis.
Arlen was a lifelong farmer and promoter of agriculture, an avid winemaker, gardener, antique farm equipment collector and restorer, builder, and in earlier days, musician, aviator and photographer.
Arlen was one of the founders of the Old Time Farm Fest in 1993 that chartered the Old Time Farm Fest Lions Club in 1998, and served as club president for 21 years. He was a grower for GNP Company, Arcadia. Arlen was a member of the International JI Case Heritage Foundation, Northland Case Collectors, and the Fountain City Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Anna; seven children: Susan (Tim) May, Hortonville, Wis., and son, Bryan May; Sandra (Joel) Johnston, Buffalo City, Wis., and children: Nicole (Brandon Brown) Johnston and daughter, Kylie Brown, Sean Johnston; Charlene (J.O.) Todd, Fountain City, Wis., and children: Christopher (Jenna) Todd and Samantha Todd; Daryl (Lisa) Schmitt, Fountain City, Wis., and children: Brittany (Nic Scholl) Schmitt and Bethany Schmitt; Bruce (Pam) Schmitt, Fountain City, Wis., and children: Jamine (Brandon) Kurth and sons Cade and Blake Kurth and Jacob (Latonia Reuter) Schmitt; Lorene (Brad) Kubis, Fountain City, Wis., and children: Corey (Katelyn Averback) Kubis, Kelly, Katie and Kenzie Kubis; and Brian (Wendy) Schmitt, Fountain City, Wis., and son, Carter Schmitt; a brother, Lyle (Michelle Dow) Schmitt, Reno, Nev.; a sister, Doris (Gerald) Duquaine, Tampa, Fla.; a stepsister, Rhoda (Norris) Abts, Fountain City, Wis., and many other friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Rose Engel Schmitt.
Mass of Christian Burial was held June 17, 2013, at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church, Winona, with Rev. Paul Breza officiating. Interment was in Bohriís Valley Cemetery.
Casket bearers were his grandsons. Honorary casket bearers were his granddaughters.
Arlen will be deeply missed by his wife, Anna, his entire family and the many people he came to know in his lifetime.
