DWI suspect flees accident (06/26/2013)

A Preston man ran from Winona County Sheriff’s deputies following a suspected drunk-driving accident, the Winona County Sheriff’s Department alleges. According to reports, Cody Otto Schultz, 21, of Preston, ran from deputies who responded to a vehicle in the ditch in Ridgeway. Schultz reportedly ran through a muddy field, losing his shoe and cellphone before a canine unit tracked him down in a shed near the scene of the accident. Schultz had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, and other signs of intoxication, deputies reported. However, he refused a blood alcohol test of any kind. Schultz was arrested for third-degree driving while intoxicated, second-degree test refusal, fleeing a peace officer on foot, careless driving, and no proof of insurance.

A passenger in Schultz’s vehicle said he thought they had hydroplaned on the wet roads. No injuries were reported.
