The (sand) storm (07/07/2013)
From: Joan Schnabel

Here in Buffalo County, it seems like we are experiencing the proverbial lull before the (sand) storm. Since the moratorium ended in April, there has been only one application for a CUP (conditional use permit) from River Valley Sands and that was denied (advisory only) by the town of Dover. But there are rumblings on the horizon from Glacier Sands. Prior to the last town board meeting in Milton, Glacier presented the town supervisors with a map of their new proposal for the transload facility across from C-FC school. Once again, they are proposing to build a bridge across the wetlands to carry all their trucks. Their big “concession” is that they are no longer asking for a dry plant. But since they came forth with this map, things have gotten eerily quiet again, leaving one to wonder what they are up to. Until they submit a request to rezone the land to industrial, they do not have to divulge anything to the public. However, it is naive to think that they have packed their bags for Texas. Could they be trying to work out something with the railroad similar to what our neighbors in Wabasha are facing? Time will tell. Please stay tuned. We need to make sure that Glacier knows that the community opposition to a transload facility in front of the school has not wavered. We need to tell them that No means No. Stay tuned for (sand)storm warnings.
