I dedicate this article to our son Duane who was killed July 6, 1976.
Come follow me. Those are the words Jesus called out to 12 more, making them His apostles. That same voice echoes down through the centuries of time to the present world. Come follow me. Yes, we seek and follow our special vocation in life, be it religious, marriage or the single state, then its our special occupation to make a living.
Besides that, God is calling each of us to help one another (to be our brother’s keeper), to find specific ways to answer the call - come follow me. Faith is a gift from God. We must desire and ask God for it. We who have it, need to find ways to share it. Writing is my gift from God and I am to share it, otherwise my effort would be naught. We must all do our part to help others to realize “our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee (God)” St. Augustine. “What good does it do to gain the whole world, but lose our souls.” We must hear God’s call to evangelize in whatever talents (graces) God gives us to do so. He’s asking that of you and me when He says come follow me. As He reveals His love and mercy to us, as His present day apostles we are to continually pass on this great news. Sister Faustina did this all so well that God gave her the title “The Secretary of Divine Mercy.” We can’t all be Saint Faustinas, but God will reveal to each of us, if we ask, what He wants from us! I know for me at this present time it is to make Jesus known and loved through what He inspires me to write. Its just like a little miracle happens with a pen in hand and a piece of paper. The words so freely flow onto it. After I do the final writing I am content to send it your way, knowing it is good because God made it so. Let us give God glory and praise, for all His goodness He gives to each of us as we share His message. Lets pray. He opens up ears to hear and read His word, hearts to love Him and to see God in the poor, lonely and underprivileged. “As long as you did it to the least of my brethren you did it to me.”
We all seem to hear God calling “Come follow me” at different stages and circumstances in our lives. Perhaps sometimes God’s voice is better manifested in physical, mental or spiritual suffering. In desperation we call out, Come Lord Jesus Come, show us the way.
I remember just such a time after our son Duane was killed, July 6, 1976. I was stuck in so much grief and sorrow for such a long time. One day I called and cried, “Lord, what will you have me do to ease my pain?” God seemed to whisper to me “Help others and you will help yourself.”
Duane heard that call to help others many times during his short life. Then on July 6, 1976, he heard the final call, “Come follow me, come home.”
P.S. I want to share the following few quotes from the Beatitudes he had written along with a letter to a friend who later shared it with me.
Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers for they are the children of God.
Blessed are they that mourn for they shall see comfort.
Remember my smile - it’s a part of God and remember my smile, it says “love.” Love, Duane.
