Valentine P. Schurhammer Jr., age 89, of rural Wabasha, Minn., died at home Thursday evening, July 4, 2013.
He was born June 27, 1924, in Wabasha, the son of Valentine and Lorraine (Braun) Schurhammer Sr. He attended the Greenfield Country School for his elementary education and he graduated from Kellogg High School. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in France and Germany.
He married Gertrude Rademacher May 22, 1954, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg. Outside of his service time given to his country, he lived his whole live on the family farm located in Greenfield Township of Wabasha County, working as a farmer.
He was a life member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post #4086 of Wabasha and the Rochester Eagles Club. In 2011, he was on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to view the World War II Memorial.
Valentine enjoyed old-time music and polka dancing. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Schurhammer, Wabasha, Minn.; children and their spouses, Gary and Michelle Schurhammer, Plainview, Minn., Steven and Kelly Schurhammer, Kellogg, Minn., Mary and John Wingert, Wabasha, Minn., Nancy Schurhammer (Keith Keller), Hastings, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law, Donald and Laura Schurhammer, Kellogg, Minn., Lucille Schurhammer, Kellogg, Minn.; nieces, nephews and cousins; and his special companion, his dog, Blackie. He was preceded in death by one son, Bruce Schurhammer, his parents, brothers, Eugene and Dean Schurhammer and his sister, Mary Greden.
A funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg, with the Reverend Monsignor Thomas Cook officiating. Interment was in St. Felix Cemetery in Wabasha. Military rites were performed by the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post #4086, the Wabasha American Legion Post #50 and the Kellogg American Legion Post #546.
