Serving the public interest (07/14/2013)
From: Kevin Haessig

Goodview, Minn.

I am sure I am not the only person concerned about Sunday’s Winona Post story that the city of Winona is looking into “designating” Lake Park as an industrial zone for legal purposes. Apparently, city officials believe it is necessary to circumvent the spirit of the law. Don’t get me wrong; I think the bike path has been in need of resurfacing for several years. But that doesn’t give the city the right to play fast and loose with the rules. There is a reason why the state legislature mandates that borrowing to pay for projects be subject to voter approval. Why do city officials think they can snub their collective noses at this requirement without repercussion? Someone needs to remind the elected leaders of Winona that they were elected to serve the PEOPLE. They were elected to serve the public interest. How does thumbing their noses at the law serve the public? This funding plan is an extremely bad idea. If repaving the bike path is such a great project, put it to the voters. That is the LAW. I would expect these kinds of shenanigans from the politicians in Washington and St. Paul. Perhaps it is just me, but I would hope local officials have higher ethical standards.
