Local artist illustrates fifth title for Necropolis Press (07/21/2013)
Independent publishing company, Necropolis Press, has released their fifth publication featuring original art by Monica Veraguth. The latest title, “Castle of the Carpathians,” by French novelist Jules Verne, is part of the “Classroom Classics” series, and also features Verne’s short story “Master Zacharius”. “Castle of the Carpathians” is the twentieth publication in the series and joins great classics from the likes of Bram Stoker and Edgar Allen Poe among many others in the fantasy and dark fiction genres.

The stories in this volume reflect the dark themes evident in Verne’s work at the beginning and end of his writing career. The early short story, “Master Zacharias” (1854), tells the story of an obsessive watchmaker faced with a Faustian bargain. Later novella, “The Castle of the Carpathians (1892), also reflects the dangers of obsession, as well as superstition. In both cases, Verne raises questions concerning the role of science in our understanding of the world and of ourselves. The stories share similar themes, despite their four-decade separation. For that reason, we chose to pair them together.

Veraguth’s previously illustrated classic titles include, “The Thing From the Lake,” Eleanor M. Ingram; “Wuthering Heights,” Emily Brontë; and “The House on the Borderland”, William Hope Hodgson. As well as an inside illustration for “A Princess of Mars” by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Just prior to “Wuthering Heights” being released, Necropolis Press released an original novel titled “The Last Post” by Jim Dietz that Veraguth also provided cover art for.

All titles by Necropolis Press can be ordered on amazon.com.
