Clean Energy Intern,
As a volunteer with the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal to Clean Energy Campaign, I am working to move America away from dirty coal burning by retiring old and outdated coal plants and replacing them with clean energy such as wind, solar, and energy efficiency. By doing this, we will help keep toxic pollution from coal plants out of the air and water, help stop climate disruption, and prevent health problems due to pollution in the air we breathe and water we drink, especially in children who are at the greatest risk.
Xcel Energy’s Sherco coal plant in Becker, Minnesota, is Minnesota’s largest and dirtiest coal plant and is also on the EPA’s ‘watch list’ for toxic mercury and sulfur dioxide pollution. On Wednesday, July 17, the Sierra Club traveled to Winona to let Minnesotans and Xcel customers in the area know that Xcel Energy is facing a critical decision about the future of Sherco units 1 and 2.
As a former resident f Winona while attending the University, I think it’s extremely important to protect the area, as well as the rest of Minnesota. Sherco sits right on the Mississippi River, and Winona is just downstream. Instead of continuing to pollute the Mississippi and Minnesota’s air, Xcel should seize the opportunity to create good paying jobs in Minnesota and become a leader in the nation for clean energy by replacing Sherco 1 and 2 with renewable energy.
We can’t take back the damage that has already been done, but it’s not too late to stop future damage to our children and climate from coal burning pollution! You can help by writing a letter to the Public Utilities Committee telling them to replace Sherco 1 and 2 with clean, renewable energy. Send an e-mail to PublicComments.PUC@state.mn.us, include the reason you care about the issue along with your name and address, and include PUC Docket 13-368 in the subject line. You may also sign an online petition at SC.org/RetireSherco.
