My first reaction to your editorial “Do you really agree with me that the existing bridge is ugly?” Then reading more I realized that you were referring to the new beautiful concrete structure.
The existing bridge has seen its day. MnDOT has stated that it may not be able to rehabilitate this existing structure without taking it down piece by piece and putting it back together. Fran, what is this going to cost? Removing the existing bridge will be a tremendous savings recognizing the recycled value. There is no reason to compare one view to another. With the existing bridge removed the view will be tremendous.
A trip across this new beautiful concrete bridge will be breath taking. No existing bridge cluttering the downstream view. Up stream the view will be wide open. People from La Crosse, Wabasha, Hastings and other places will be coming to Winona to ride on this truly exciting structure and wishing their bridges were as wide open.
After the new bridge is complete the connections to Winona and Wisconsin will be complete.
Four lanes across the Mississippi at this time are ludicrous.
Removing the existing bridge is the only way to go.
