We all live in Winona for one reason or another, most of us because itís impossible to leave a place like this.
Winona, like every town or city, has some bragging rights, whether it be we had the most millionaires or some notable people in history lived or came from here. The best one that suits this situation is that this town isnít much now, but it was really something in its day. You know, we havenít grown much, and thatís ok. We lost a lot of structures that canít be replaced, and thatís sad.
Now we are all excited about a new bridge, the single largest investment in this city we will see in our lifetimes. I donít want to lose that excitement in five years when we realize what we settled for. If we get the bridge that this city deserves, it will be one of a kind on its scale in Minnesota. Travelers will stop to take pictures of it and picnic in the parks below, and if itís tourism and pride youíre interested in, the proposed alternative can hardly be a part of that.
With the right decision now, when the time for replacement comes again, there will be two structures crossing the Mississippi that our children will come together to save, not just one.
Donít let this slip away.
