Annual Old Main event Sept. 14 (08/28/2013)
Taste wine while you enjoy featured musical artists in Galesville at Old Main’s 2013 Main Event Saturday, September 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Elmaro Winery of Trempealeau and the Riverview Winery of La Crescent will offer a wonderful selection of local wines to taste under the pines at Old Main.

Nancy Edstrom of Winona and Betty Ray of Galesville will play some of your favorite popular music on Old Main’s vintage Hammond C organ from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Nancy’s dad used to sell Hammond organs, and Nancy developed her love for the popular music we now call “old chestnuts” because of her father’s business. Nancy will play the “golden oldies” you’ve always loved, and Betty will play a number of those Gershwin numbers we can’t forget. When Nancy came to Old Main to check out the organ her face broke into a wonderful smile—it was like meeting an old friend.

Nancy’s dad is probably the one who sold the organ to the brothers at Marynook on the Gale College Campus when they operated it as a novitiate. The Hammond organs sold for churches have the same great sounds as the organs sold for bars. We’ll hear Nancy and Betty playing those favorite songs from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Ron Reimer will entertain with his accordion from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Ron and Terry Grosskopf on bass, will provide a potpourri of musical styling’s from bebop to Beatles and beyond. Doug Mahlum will provide the music from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and all of us know that when he gets started we don’t want him to quit. We’ll have the organ played from time to time during the afternoon so you can hear it if you come later.

Specialty meats, cheese, and crackers will be paired with the wines. The wineries will offer suggestions for pairing their wines with food at home. The event will also offer non alcoholic choices, coffee, and sweets will be on hand.

Tickets are priced at $18.00 for the event and eight ounces of wine plus food snacks or $12.00 for the event with food snacks and some other beverage of your choice. The Galesville Lions Club will offer their famous cheese curds for sale, and beer will be available.

The very popular Main Event raffle will feature tickets for seats at a Packers/Vikings home game at Lambeau Field plus cash prizes. Be sure to get your name into the drawing.

Beach Corners Art Studio will have a display of art for sale, and there will be a variety of other local artists showing their work. The silent auction always features a lot of great items for your bid including a few art pieces. The event will also feature a display of quilts and rug weaving, and a display of artifacts in the Old Main History and Genealogy Center.

The performing arts committee will unveil its fall program of coming musical events and art attractions.

Funds from the Main Event will be used to help meet the operational costs of Old Main and to continue upgrading the 151 year old building. Painting, tuck pointing, and lighting are among the most urgent needs. An elevator is envisioned for the future.

Old Main is located at the south end of 12th Street on Galesville’s west side. Signs will guide you to the site. Old Main offers an arts and history venue that is becoming a regional treasure. Check out www.oldmain.org for more information.
