WAPS Board nixes spring break tradition (09/08/2013)
By Jen Burris
In March 2013 the Board of the Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) approved the 2013-2014 school year calendar, removing the traditional spring break.

A survey with two calendar options was voted on by WAPS staff. Option 1, which did not include a spring break, received 42.2 percent of the staff vote, while option 2 that included a spring break received 57.8 percent of the staff vote. The survey findings were then presented to the School Board, where members would come to a final decision.

School Board members discussed concerns about having a spring break near the scheduling of state testing. Members questioned with whether teachers would have adequate time to prepare their students for the test. “The primary concern for the discussion was the timing of the testing,” said Jeanne Nelson, school board member.

Board Member Jay Kohner made a motion to approve the option 1 schedule with no spring break. Ben Baratto seconded the motion, which passed 5-2. Board members Steve Schild, Kohner, Baratto, Tina Lehnertz, and Mohamed Elhindi voted in favor of the schedule without a spring break, while Brian Zeller and Nelson voted against it.

“I felt, personally, that a more complete survey with input from parents was needed,” Nelson noted.
