Explore the ‘Lure and Lore’ of life along the Mississippi River at the Woodlawn Cemetery Walk (09/08/2013)
Presented by The Winona County Historical Society, the Voices From the Past: Woodlawn Cemetery Walk brings to life those from Winona’s past who are buried in beautiful Woodlawn Cemetery. This year’s Voices From the Past: Woodlawn Cemetery Walk will be October 12 and 13, Noon - 3 p.m. and will explore the “Lure and Lore” of life along the Mississippi River. Woodlawn Cemetery is just off Highway 61 (Huff Street intersection) across from the “small” Lake Winona along the base of Winona’s beautiful bluffs. Watch for signs and parking attendants will assist you for parking. Admission to the Walk is $7 for adults, $5 for students 13 and older, and $3 for youth 12 and younger and is taken at the Cemetery gate the days of the Walk. Sponsored by Merchants Bank!

Winona is known as the “Island City” because it was built on a sandbar. As you walk through Woodlawn, you get a good view of Lake Winona, which was once part of the river channel, making Winona an island on the river. The Mississippi has played a vital role in Winona’s history and so this year the people who worked on the river; lived off of the river; played in the river; and even died because of the river, will tell their stories of life along the Mississippi.

This year there is more flexibility to attendees who wish to go through the Cemetery on their own.

Guides will lead groups from site to site through the cemetery offering information about the Cemetery, Winona History and area grave sites.

Site Managers will direct attendees in and out of the site area as not to disturb on-going performances. Site managers will also offer information about the Cemetery, Winona history and area grave sites throughout the Walk.

You can ride The Trestor Trolley at Noon each day if you are unable to make the Walk on foot. There is no extra cost, just sign up in advance to be guaranteed a seat by calling 507-454-2723 ext. 0. We kindly request that those able to walk who are attending the event with someone riding the Trolley, go with a group either before or after the Trolley Tour, so others who cannot make the Walk are able to get a seat on the Trolley Tours. Please stop at the Ticket Table before you board the Trolley.

NEW! Indoor Performance

The sites for this year’s Walk will be performed at the Winona County History Center for those who wish to have an indoor or need a fully handicap accessible experience. Thursday, October 10 at 7 p.m. at the History Center, same admission as the Walk will be taken at the door. No reservations necessary.
