Commercial future for Quality Inn? (09/15/2013)
By Chris Rogers
The Quality Inn may soon have a new identity. Rivers Hotel Company purchased the property at Mankato Avenue and Highway 61 last Wednesday for $1.1 million. A Washington state-based bank sold the property, which includes tenant businesses Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Tripps Beer and Brats, and Perkins Restaurant.

"That's probably one of the best commercial corners in the city and it's been looking pretty bad for a while," said Rivers Hotel Company owner Mike Rivers of his new property. "We don't actually have any definite plans for it yet," he explained. Perkins and Enterprise are expected to continue leasing their spaces. The hotel, on the other hand, "is in pretty bad condition," Rivers commented. His company plans to sell all of the furniture and equipment next month, "Then we'll decide by next spring what to do with the property," he said.

It is "a good site," Rivers continued, "I'm sure retail people want to do something there."

The Quality Inn has been troubled by back taxes, unpaid utilities, and flood damage in recent years. Rivers owns several successful hotels and business properties throughout the city.
