The essence of Winona (09/15/2013)
Part VIII

On that patriotic note, remember now, just what we’re trying to find,

We’re searching through our memories and though they’re one of a kind

There’s a commonality, yes, there is this common thread

But is it something tangible or just something in the head?

Is it the place, the time, or our own lives that we see?

From experience or emotion, highlighted by history

That we sketch the outline of a lengthy landscape telling our own little story

Or from some speculation based on pure conjecture

That we write a poem or paint a colorful and busy picture to capture

The place, the time, or our own lives that we see?

All of which would cover the wall at the levee, or even one at some mall,

In any event with that said, it still wouldn’t cover it all

And though it’s mixed up, it’s mixed up together, and makes a unique blend

Becoming in the end your very own collage, that’s what I contend

And while it’s different, it’s still very much the same you would see, as the ones others have of this town,

If you could gather folk today and back when and stand them the lake around,

And ask them the question to hear just what they’d claim

Do you think they’d say yes, yes, yes, it’s in the very name?

Hah! WINONA WENONAH however you spell it

You know it’s something special, for many did and still sell it

From the Chamber’s homepage advertising all that’s here

To the Neanderthal Ice Age, back when sightseeing was really austere

From Information Services, manufacturing and trade

To interstate commerce and retail goods sales where our economy is made

To our judges, our lawyers, all the preachers and teachers,

To the Fish and Game Wildlife folks protecting our streams and creatures

To dine-in restaurants and big tippers

And the fast food chain hamburger flippers

From the DNR bunch to the Park and Rec crowd

To all who live and labor, making this city proud

To our police and the Sheriff and to public works

And all the volunteers who don’t even get perks

To all the janitors, cleaners and aesthetic engineers,

The doctors, nurses, firefighters and first responders

To all of them (and those I’ve omitted) THREE BIG CHEERS

And whether you’re rich or you’re poor or you’re sad or you’re glad

Or you’ve just stomped out the door angry, frustrated or mad

Even if you’re happily employed and pretty darned content

Or without a job and annoyed or in a state of lament

In what it says about this place, this poem applies to you,

And will offer one beneficial thing that’s very simple to do

Theodore L. Schoewe
